International Day of Biological Diversity

International Day of Biological Diversity

International Day of Biological Diversity On May 22, an important environmental date is celebrated all over the world – the International Day of Biological Diversity. This year, this important date is celebrated under the motto: “From agreement to action: restore biodiversity.” A number of events are dedicated to this date, including among school-age children. With the organizational support of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Uzbekistan, the Ecological Resource Center Ekomaktab and the Republican Children's School "Barkamol Avlod", a creative drawing competition "The Beauty of the Biological Diversity of Uzbekistan" was launched. Children studying in the Barkamol Avlod fine arts studios, as well as schoolchildren of the capital and the Tashkent region, will be able to take part in it. The children were given a difficult task – to reflect in their drawings the importance of biological diversity, to note its beauty and the main threats leading to its loss. Based on the results of the competition, the best drawings will be selected, which will subsequently serve as good promotional material at the upcoming 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species, held in October this year in Samarkand. Along with this, on May 21, young ecologists participating in the competition went to the Brichmulinsky forestry, where they got acquainted with the main representatives of the unique flora and fauna of Uzbekistan in a playful and exciting way, learned what a reserve and a national natural park are, what threats contribute to the destruction of biodiversity and how they can help preserve it. The most important discovery for young ecologists was knowledge about the importance of biological diversity, which plays a decisive role in the well-being of the environment and humans. Aspiring artists were given the opportunity to conduct their next plein air in nature in order to more vividly and colorfully reflect the beauty of the mountainous terrain of the Ugam-Chatkal National Natural Park and highlight the most striking objects of biological diversity. After the educational part of the event, all participants, accompanied by forestry employees, went on a hike along a mountain trail and got acquainted with the various trees growing there. With the help of senior mentors, young ecologists took part in an eco-action to remove dry branches and clear a spring, which is a watering place for wild animals. Working with the younger generation in the field of environmental education is the basis for the country’s sustainable development and environmental conservation. Today's participants in the environmental festival, which took place in the Brichmuli forestry enterprise, received not only important knowledge and skills in preserving biodiversity. They were imbued with love for their native nature and respect for the work of people who guard the well-being of the environment.
