USAID transferred a new laboratory to Uzbekistan. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) transferred the newest INVITRO laboratory to Uzbekistan – the country's first laboratory for stone and pome fruits. The USAID Agricultural Linkages Project, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan, launched a laboratory equipped with the most modern equipment at the Mirzaev Research Institute of Horticulture and Viticulture. At the opening ceremony, US Ambassador to Uzbekistan Ms. Spratlen gave opening remarks and toured the facilities along with representatives of the Government of Uzbekistan. This laboratory will make it possible to obtain every week up to 5,000 seedlings of pome and stone fruit trees that are resistant to viruses and salty soils. Unlike conventional greenhouses, which can only operate at certain times of the year, this laboratory will allow you to grow seedlings all year round. The equipment purchased as part of the project is valued at approximately $300,000 (three hundred thousand US dollars), and can generate an annual income for the Institute of at least $100,000 (one hundred thousand US dollars) through the sale of grown seedlings. The best seedlings will be available to Uzbek farmers at a lower price. More than 50 participants took part in the equipment handover ceremony, including representatives of the Government of Uzbekistan, private greenhouse farms and, most importantly, students of the Tashkent Agrarian University.
