You can no longer influence climate change – you need to adapt. The Global Commission on Adaptation to Climate Change on Earth warns that even with all the enormous efforts, planetary change cannot be stopped, it is inevitable. What should people do? Adapt… On September 10, the Global Commission on Adaptation to New Climate Conditions presented a report stating that climate change has reached the point where it is no longer possible to change anything, it is necessary to adapt to new climatic conditions. “We are the last generation that can influence the course of climate change, and we are the first generation that must come to terms with the consequences,” Commission Chairman and former UN chief Ban Ki-moon said at the report's launch in Beijing. It is envisaged that between 2020 and 2030, approximately US$1.8 trillion will be invested in five key areas to protect nature. • Early warning systems for storms, tsunamis and other extreme weather conditions to save lives as much as possible. • Climate resilient infrastructure. All construction work (roads, houses, bridges, etc.) must be carried out to the highest standard of quality • Forest protection. Limiting logging and restoration should protect against landslides and storms, especially for residents of coastal and mountainous areas. • Improving agricultural conditions, namely the transition to more drought-resistant grain varieties. Scientists also recommend abandoning those crops that have a negative impact on the soil. • Increasing fresh water resources. In addition to effectively saving existing resources, developed countries need to launch projects to increase the amount of fresh water source, as well as provide technical assistance to third world countries on environmental measures. “Global action to slow climate change is important but not sufficient. We must make enormous efforts to adapt to the conditions that are becoming our inevitability,” the report’s authors write. Due to insufficient measures to curb global climate change, the world has already witnessed numerous climate disasters: increasing heat waves, severe storms, water shortages, rising sea levels. In one of the latest examples of the ongoing transformation of the Earth's climate system, a deadly hurricane devastated the Bahamas. It was caused by an Atlantic storm that many climate scientists consider potentially the strongest on record. Summarizing the efforts needed to improve the world's preparedness for the climate challenges expected in the near future, Patrick Verkooyen, director general of the center that produced the report, called for global action and full consolidation.
