Problems of water distribution and water consumption in Uzbekistan and steps for their rational use

The current annual water demand across all sectors of Uzbekistan’s economy is estimated at about 64.2 km³. In the future, the balance between drinking water, industrial use, and rural supply will shift, making efficient water use even more important.

According to available estimates, the country’s total water demand by 2030 should not exceed 60.1 km³ per year. This requires water-saving technologies, better land productivity, and more accurate planning.

After independence, Uzbekistan showed a downward trend in water withdrawal, although in recent years the level has stabilised at roughly 55 km³ per year.

Rational water use is becoming a central task for agriculture, municipal services, and industry, especially under climate change and growing resource constraints.
