In Spain, the phrase “plastic sea” does not describe waste. It refers to the vast greenhouse landscapes, especially in the province of Almeria, where tens of thousands of hectares are covered by modern greenhouses.
During a UzWaterAware study tour, participants visited the “Las Palmerillas” experimental centre of the Cajamar financial group and saw how greenhouses are used to test new approaches to agroecology, water saving, and energy efficiency.
The centre studies new greenhouse designs, rational use of water and energy, biodegradable materials, extending the life cycle of plastics, and recycling technologies.
In this context, plastic is treated as a technological material that can increase yields and save resources when it is properly designed, monitored, and recycled.
The Almeria experience shows that even under water scarcity, sustainable agriculture can be built by connecting research, production, and responsible resource management.
